How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes acoustic waves to promote healing and reduce pain in various musculoskeletal conditions. The treatment involves delivering high-energy shockwaves to the affected area, which helps by:

  • Stimulating circulation. Growth of new blood vessels (called angiogenesis) is stimulated in the affected area, which improves delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients to the healing area.  This can greatly improve the healing process.
  • Reducing scar tissue and calcification.  The shockwave causes micro-fragmentation and tensile stress on scar tissue and calcification in the affected area, stimulating break-up of these deposits.
  • Encouraging cellular regeneration.  Cells responsible for healing and tissue production are stimulated, including fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and stem cells. This can lead to faster healing.
  • Pain reduction. Chemicals that help naturally reduce your percieved pain are released when stimulated by shockwave to improve circulation, encourage cell regeneration, and enhance tissue repair.

Most patients experience a significant reduction in pain and improved mobility following treatment, with the effects often becoming more pronounced over time.
